Counseling FAQ

  • What is counseling? Is it the same as therapy?

For most people, the terms counseling and therapy are used interchangeably. I use both to describe our work together. Essentially, counseling is a professional, confidential relationship between you and a licensed mental health professional.

It is not just casual talking; it is a collaborative process where we use evidence-based techniques—validated through scientific research—to help you address specific challenges, develop practical skills, and promote long-term personal growth.

The goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you gain the insight and tools you need to navigate life more effectively.

  • What are your fees? Do you accept insurance?

My practice is private pay, which means I do not bill insurance companies directly. This ensures your privacy and allows us to focus your treatment entirely on your needs without any insurance-mandated restrictions.

Session Fees: My standard fee for a 50-minute individual counseling session is $100 and the fee for couples counseling is $120. Payment is due at the time of service and can be made via credit/debit card, HSA/FSA card, personal check, or cash.

  • How do you make counseling affordable?

Counseling is an investment — of both time and resources — in yourself, and I am passionate about providing mental health services that are accessible regardless of your personal financial situation.

If you have a specific financial need, please reach out to discuss your situation. I offer an income-based sliding scale and a limited number of reduced-fee appointments each week to keep therapy accessible.

  • What is your approach to therapy?

At my core, I am a person-centered/humanistic counselor, meaning I genuinely believe you are the expert on your own life. My primary role is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you are truly heard and understood. This powerful connection is the foundation for all meaningful change. While we will always honor and prioritize your feelings and experience, we won't stop there.

My counseling style is also practical and focused on immediate results. Although we may briefly look at your past to understand patterns, our work is primarily focused on the here-and-now and what you want to achieve moving forward.

In therapy, I integrate evidence-based techniques like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for changing unhelpful thought patterns, reality therapy for helping you take control of your choices, and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) to quickly identify your existing strengths.

Because I am trained in a wide range of therapeutic approaches and techniques, I will always personalize our sessions based on your unique needs and preferences.

  • What can I expect at our first session?

The first session is all about comfort and connection. It's primarily a chance for us to get to know each other and begin building our therapeutic relationship. We’ll start with some introductions, and then I'll guide you through a conversation about what brings you to counseling at this point in your life, what you hope to achieve, and what your past experiences have been.

There is absolutely no pressure to share anything you aren't ready to discuss. Think of it as an open, safe conversation where you can ask me questions, understand my style, and decide if I feel like the right fit to support you on your journey. By the end, we will have a clearer idea of your goals and a shared path forward.

  • How long does therapy last?

This is a great question, and the honest answer is: it is entirely up to you and your preferences.

Because my practice is private pay, we have the flexibility to design a therapy timeline that works best for your life, goals, and budget.

Some clients come in for brief, solution-focused work (often 8 to 12 sessions) to address a specific issue, while others find ongoing support helpful for long-term personal growth and maintenance. It’s entirely up to you!

We will regularly discuss your progress and goals, and I will be there every step of the way to help you decide when to adjust our frequency or when you feel ready to wrap up our work together.
